Packraft Expedition Fundamentals Course

A three-day, two-night introduction to self-supported packraft travel, taught through a real journey in the Lake District or Scottish Highlands.

COST : £650

This is an expedition-based course, with skills taught through a real, continuous journey rather than isolated sessions at a single venue. You will carry everything needed in or attached to your packraft, camp along the route and make decisions in changing open-water, river and expedition environments.

Across both locations, the course covers:

  • Packraft preparation, packing, loading and overnight expedition systems

  • Comparing packrafts, paddles, buoyancy aids and storage options

  • Flat-water, open-water and introductory moving-water paddling

  • Reading wind, waves, river flow, hazards and obstacles

  • Group communication, positioning, route choice and journey management

  • Capsize recovery, river swimming, throwline use, simple rescues and portaging

  • Campcraft, water purification, food planning, fishing and responsible foraging

  • Packraft maintenance, repair kits and field repairs

  • Expedition first aid, cold-water incidents and emergency scenarios

  • Emergency communication, evacuation planning and changing plans in response to conditions
