Climb Cìoch Nose and Traverse A’ Chìoch Ridge

A Big Mountain Day in Torridon

Cìoch Nose into A’ Chìoch Ridge A Serious Day Out on One of Scotland’s most dramatic Ridges

Straight out of the bible that is Classic RockCìoch Nose was once described as “the Diff that ends all Diffs.” In our view, it’s one of the best climbing days in Scotland. The route climbs a proud line through Torridon sandstone, with exposure and movement that feel completely out of place at the Severe grade. There’s far more air beneath your feet than most climbers expect, and the experience is anything but ordinary — it’s steep, complex, and sustained.

The rock type here matters. Torridon sandstone shapes the style of climbing — more friction-dependent than most Scottish mountain routes, and often compared to gritstone. If you’re used to indoor walls or the gabbro of Skye, it’ll ask something different of you. But if you’re looking for a big, committing multi-pitch route with real character, Cìoch Nose and the A’ Chìoch Ridge continuation deliver.

Your Cìoch Nose and Traverse A’ Chìoch Itinerary

Meet at viewpoint car park on the Bealach na Bà road

We begin the day from the viewpoint car park on the Bealach na Bà road. It’s worth allowing extra time to get there—this steep, single-track pass is one of the most scenic in Scotland, and the tight hairpin bends often mean slower traffic, especially in busy months.

From the car park, we climb up past the mast before dropping into Coire a’ Chaorachain. From there, we descend into the corrie and make a rising traverse along rough terraces to reach the base of the climb.

The Diff to end all Diffs!

A 6-pitch Severe (4a) route on clean Torridonian sandstone, first made famous in Classic Rock. The line follows a natural series of cracks, ledges and chimneys up the prominent nose feature. Most pitches are steady, but exposed, with good gear throughout. Expect a mix of chimneying, slabby moves and some steeper sections—particularly on pitch 4. The climb tops out near the roadside mast, making for an efficient descent.

Scrambling After the Climb

After the final pitch of rock climbing, there’s still a committing section to reach the mast. This begins with two short roped pitches of easy climbing (around VDiff), followed by continuous Grade 2 scrambling.

The ridge undulates with rocky steps and short drops, requiring careful movement and route-finding. Eventually, you reach the radio mast, where a clear track leads back down to the car park in 10 minutes.
